Thursday Bible Study Update

For the past three weeks our group has been going through the Art of Marriage study on Thursday nights.  I have really enjoyed the time of fellowship, and of all the great interaction and learning we’ve all been doing.

We have three more weeks of the marriage study before we begin again with our expositional study of the Bible, this time we’ll be studying the book of Acts.  The Acts study will commence on the 18th of October, God willing, and it should be one of the most exciting studies we’ve done in our group’s quick three years together.

Thanks to all the families who have sacrificed time, money, and food to come and spend time in fellowship with each other and in worship of the Lord.  Stay tuned for more information as that time draws closer.  If you have any questions about the upcoming study, please email PJ Wenzel at: pjwenzel@gmail.com.

The Art of Marriage Study…Coming Thursday Nights

I wanted to make sure that everyone had an opportunity to check out the trailer for the Art of Marriage Study we’ll be doing starting in two weeks at the Stone’s House.

The video is below, and in case you didn’t get a chance to be with us on Thursday night, I wanted to make sure you knew that most couples will be rotating in and out of the study (with one couple watching the kids each week) and then getting to take the DVD home and watch it together so they didn’t miss anything.

Please invite your spouses (if they aren’t coming already), and your neighbors and others who may not have had the opportunity to come to the Marriage Seminar when it was in Columbus.  I expect God to do amazing things during this study, and hope you’ll join me in praying over it as the next two weeks will go by quickly.

Location: The Stone’s house: 6433 Phoenix Park Dr., Dublin OH 43016

Time: 6:30pm Thursday Evenings (dinner first, then study)

Thursday Night Bible Study

For about three years now we’ve been holding a Thursday night Bible study at the Stone’s house.  At the beginning we did studies based solely on what Pastor has preached on the week prior.  Then, after being gripped by a deep conviction that we needed to be studying the Bible systematically and exegetically, we began a verse by verse study in the book of Philippians.  That study was followed by a similar study in Ephesians.

Now, we are one week away from completing a study of 1 Samuel (and the first 5 chapters of 2 Samuel), and beginning a short marriage study using material from Family Life’s Art of Marriage.

I can’t tell you how rewarding and humbling its been to be a part of this time of fellowship and growth, and I wanted to make sure that everyone in the class had a chance to learn more about what it is that we do on a given Thursday night.  If you haven’t been yet, you need to consider coming, its really an amazing time.

What goes on…

Each Thursday begins with a large meal.  Everyone is stuffed to the brim, and we all get to catch up on the latest goings on with one another’s families.  There’s a cooking rotation, so the burden is split up really well.

After the meal, we all gather into the living room (for those who can fit – overflow into the dining room now) and sing hymns and choruses together.  No one in our group has a record-label quality voice!  BUT, we all appreciate the opportunity to get before our King and begin our study of the Bible by expressing our thankfulness to the Lord.  It’s usually one of the best parts of the evening.

Once we’ve sung, and prayed over the group, the group splits into three smaller groups. The children split into two groups either going outside or into the basement with the older boys going together, and the girls and young children together in another group.  The young men spend the first 10-15 minutes with a male adult who leads them through a Bible story and some catechism work.  We rotate the men involved here so everyone has an opportunity to be a part of this.

The adults are led in a verse by verse study by either myself, Parris Payden, or Derek Stone.  Each of us has a different style of teaching, but we all love the Lord, and have a passion for discipleship and teaching.

We conclude the evening in prayer, and sometimes get everyone together for a last hymn if there’s time.  The evening is usually the highlight of our week (speaking for my family).  Not only are the children being discipled and getting to spend time with their friends, but the adults are discipled, encouraged, renewed, and educated.

If you’re interested in coming, let Parris, myself, or Derek know by clicking on our names (it will pop up an email address).  We’d love to have you there, and look forward to seeing what God will continue to do in the lives of those He’s blessed to be a part of our family here at Dublin Baptist.

Here’s a picture from this week’s study – the boys were having a Lego castle building competition!

Men’s Retreat Pictures…

So it’s almost criminal that I’ve taken this long to post pictures from the June men’s campout.  But, I figured that later is better than never.  I’ll definitely try to get better at this as time goes along.  Enjoy!

Golf Tournament for causelife

Some of you might already know that I’m hosting a golf tournament in 6 weeks, and I wanted to pass along the info. The tournament is benefiting causelife – a group that is part of World Help’s ministry.  The goal of the tournament is to raise about $15,000 to build a water well in Guatemala, after the well is built we’ll share the gospel message.

This is an amazing organization, with a real heart for sharing the gospel with the lost and showing others the love of Christ – something I know each of you is interested in.  This will be a neat opportunity to bring unsaved brothers and sisters to either golf, or come to the dinner afterwards and hear Vernon Brewer talk.  Vernon was the first graduate of Liberty University and is really passionate about the spread of the gospel.

We’re playing golf at Longenberger Golf Club – consistently rated one of the best public courses in America.

Please join me in this effort – I think its going to be a lot of fun!  You can click here to register and check out the video below, on the work that this effort will help with…

Summer Reading Group

A few weeks ago while I was at the Ligonier National Conference, it was suggested that several of us start reading and discussing Steven Lawson’s Pillars of Grace. So I have put together a summer reading and discussion program for whoever wants to be involved.  Parris Payden will be launching our discussion site (likely to just be a Facebook page) here in the coming weeks.  In the meantime, take a look Pillars of Grace Syllabus, and investigate more about the book here.

WHEN: The “class” begins the first week of June and goes through the end of August.

RSVP: Please let PJ know if you’re interested in joining the group for this study and we’ll get you signed up and pass along more information: pjwenzel@gmail.com

The Amazon summary is this:

The doctrines of grace are often known as the five points of Calvinism, but they were not the invention of John Calvin or his reforming cohorts of the sixteenth century. Rather, they are biblical doctrines, as Dr. Steven J. Lawson demonstrated in his book Foundations of Grace (2006). Now, in Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson shows that the doctrines of grace have been understood and taught sometimes in embryonic form, sometimes with great clarity throughout church history. From the time of the early church fathers to the years of the Reformers, there have been key men in the church, pillars as it were, who stood on the foundation of Scripture and upheld the truth of God’s sovereign role in salvation.

In Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson walks readers through the ups and downs of church history, profiling these voices for the truth. The inescapable conclusion is that the doctrines of grace are no innovation, but the consistent witness of some of the greatest men of the church.

Ligonier National Conference

Coming up on March 15-17 Ligonier Ministries will be hosting their national conference in Orlando.  If this is something that interests you, please let me know and I’ll make sure you get a ticket (I’ll take care of the tickets – you just take care of getting to Orlando!).

Ligionier Ministries was founded by Dr. R.C. Sproul, and has been greatly influential in my life, and the lives of many members here at Dublin Baptist.  Check out the video below for more information on the conference.

Burning hearts are not nourished by empty heads.

One of the things most alarming about today’s culture is the way in which evangelicals are responding to attacks. Many have bought into the idea that having one’s heart in the right place is all that matters—that a passion for Jesus and the life of the mind are mutually exclusive. What this view misses is that burning hearts are not nourished by empty heads. We must develop our minds if we are to sustain our passion for the Savior and deal with the bias against us.

At Ligonier Ministries’ 2012 National Conference, we will be addressing this problem as we consider the theme of “The Christian Mind.” From March 15-17, 2012, R.C. Sproul will be joined by Sinclair Ferguson, Robert Godfrey, Michael Horton, Steven J. Lawson, Albert Mohler, Stephen Meyer, R.C. Sproul Jr., and Del Tackett to consider the importance of building a Christian worldview, the role of education in the Christian life, science and God’s natural revelation, defending the faith, and many other topics.

G.R.O.W.

As I mentioned this past Sunday, the GROW outreach ministry is going to be kicking back into full gear in February, and our class will be to be a big part of it!  Our week will be the third Tuesday of every month.  In February that will be the 21st.  Some details on GROW (Go Reach Our World) are below, and we’ll be passing around a sign up sheet in the coming weeks for those who want to be involved (I’m thinking we should all be involved, right?!)

Each Week at GROW, there are the following opportunities for service:
1 – Prayer – while others are talking directly to the community, you’re talking directly to God to help cover all that we do during an evening.
2 – Make Visits – these are Evangelistic visits, Prospect visits, and Care-giving visits. (We send out in teams of three).
3 – Letter Writing – The church will provide sample letters for us, and we’ll write personal follow up letters to guests and visitors who attended the church recently.
4 – Phone Calls – Just as with the letters, there are sample scripts for the phone calls.  Phone calls allow you to follow up with guests, and call absentees.
5 – Child Care – This hasn’t been a need in the recent months but now that more people are engaged in GROW we may need more people doing this.

Here’s what a typical GROW schedule looks like
6:50-7:00pm sign in
7:00-7:10pm welcomes and assignments.
7:10-8:00pm go to work!
8:00-8:15pm report and celebrate the work
8:15pm prayer and dismiss

Please consider coming to this each month.  It’s going to be a great time to grow together as a class (no pun intended), and reach others in the community with the love of Christ.
